Re: Sam Querrey

Querrey clinches Olympus US Open Series men's title

Sam Querrey clinched the 2009 Olympus US Open Series men’s title with a 7-5, 6-3 round-of-16 win over Bjorn Phau at Pilot Pen Tennis, the final Series event of the season in New Haven. With the victory, Querrey ties Andy Murray in the Olympus US Open Bonus Challenge men’s standings but officially wins the overall Series title by virtue of the tie-breaker (greatest number of 2009 Olympus US Open Series matches won in the current year). Juan Martin del Potro finishes the Series in third place.

Since the Olympus US Open Series began in 2004, every Series winner had been, or went on to be, No. 1 in the world rankings. Querrey will now compete for the largest payout in tennis history at the 2009 US Open -- $2.6 million ($1.6 million for winning the US Open and a $1 million bonus for winning the US Open and the Olympus US Open Series).

On the women’s side, Elena Dementieva currently holds the lead in the Olympus US Open Series Bonus Challenge women’s standings. Flavia Pennetta can still capture the overall Series title -- by winning the Pilot Pen Tennis event at New Haven -- while Jelena Jankovic and Marion Bartoli could finish the Series in second or third place.

Querrey and the women's winner of the Olympus US Open Series will compete for $1 million in bonus prize money at the 2009 US Open. The second- and third-place finishers will compete for $500,000 and $250,000, respectively.

Rafael Nadal won the 2008 Olympus US Open Series men’s title, and Dinara Safina won the women’s title. In 2007, Roger Federer collected the biggest paycheck in tennis history -- $2.4 million -- for winning the US Open and the Olympus US Open Series. In 2005, Kim Clijsters also captured both the US Open and the Olympus US Open Series, winning $2.2 million -- the largest purse in women’s sports history.

Now in its sixth season, the Olympus US Open Series has established itself as a true regular season of hard-court tennis, linking 10 summer tournaments to the US Open. In 2008, Olympus became the first title sponsor of the Series. The Olympus US Open Series is also supported by sponsors American Express, Evian and MassMutual Financial Group.

Re: Sam Querrey

Querrey Puts New Face on U.S. Men’s Tennis

Sam Querrey’s uncle stood up clapping and yelling constantly Saturday night at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven. “C’mon Sam!” he yelled. “There’s still plenty of tennis to be played!”

Dan Querrey was cheering on his nephew as he fought a losing battle against Fernando Verdasco in the final of the Pilot Pen tournament.

Along with Dan Querrey, however, over 5,000 fans were standing too, most of them shouting encouragement to America’s new-found tennis star: Sam Querrey.

“The tides are changing,” Dan Querrey said after the match. “His goal is to be a top-10 player. He’s coming up slowly, but I tell you, he’s getting there.”

As Andy Roddick has resurfaced as the face of American men’s tennis after his epic Wimbledon final, a change of guard has quietly taken place at No. 2.

James Blake, long an ATP staple and second fiddle to Roddick, has suffered from injuries and disappointment this season. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Californian Querrey has stepped up the ranking ladder week by week.

At this week’s United States Open, Querrey is seeded at a major for the first time, one slot behind Blake. When the rankings came out this morning, however, Querrey moved one spot ahead of Blake, mostly because of his successful swing this summer, in which he won the United States Open Series, a six-tournament points race leading up to the Open.

Querrey’s rise has been highlighted by his wildly successful summer. He won a tournament in Los Angeles in July and made the finals in New Haven.

He also won the most matches of any ATP player this summer, going 20-6 in a run that included second-place finishes in Newport, R.I. (not a United States Open Series event) and Indianapolis.

The most important moment of Querrey’s summer, however, came two weeks ago in Cincinnati. He beat Roddick there in two tie-break sets, overcoming his mentor for the first time in four career matches.

“Definitely one of my best wins ever, probably the best for me,” Querrey said after the victory.

Querrey began the year ranked 38th, winning 28 matches last year. He has already won 39 matches this year and is aiming to move into the top 20.

Last year, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Querrey advanced to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, falling to Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Querrey has a fan club called the Samurai. He tweets about his life on and off the court, including a post last week about attending a Taylor Swift concert during the Pilot Pen.

On Sunday, he announced via Twitter that he’d be opening the Nasdaq Stock Exchange this morning, the first day of the United States Open: “Watch cnbc tomorrow morning at 930 eastern time. I’m ringing the opening bell for nasdaq.”

His celebrity has grown slowly. At the Pilot Pen on Saturday night, his uncle wasn’t the only one using his first name in calling out encouragement. Fans seem to be taken with Querrey. His name echoed throughout the stadium, called out by fans young and old.

He even had his own spot in the United States Open Series commercials that featured the top men and women, where he talked about his “Ace Face.”

Querrey has noticed a growing chatter from the stands and said he enjoyed the electricity and energy that the crowds bring to his matches.

“I like rowdy crowds,” Querrey said. “I like the Open for that. The better I do, the more recognition I get, especially with fans. I love my Samurais; they’re growing. Now there are Samurai cousins, too.”

No matter if they’re cousins, uncles or strangers, people are starting to notice Sam Querrey.

Tennis player Querrey hurts arm in freak accident

NEW YORK — Sam Querrey cut his right forearm in a freak accident after practicing for the Thailand Open in Bangkok and will be out at least four to six weeks, the U.S. Tennis Association says.

USTA spokesman Tim Curry says the 21-year-old Querrey sat on a glass table after practice Monday and fell through, hurting his arm. The injury required emergency surgery.

A right-hander from Thousand Oaks, Calif., Querrey is No. 25 in the ATP rankings.

Re: Sam Querrey

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/DEUCE- … errey.aspx

There’s no formal training or college credit, but Dan Farrugia maintains that he has the best internship in the world. Serving in a pioneering role as intern to America’s World No. 23 Sam Querrey, Dan aggregates many of the roles that are typically the domain of agents and coaches, parlaying his concierge service into a full-time gig with one of tennis’ hottest rising stars. From gripping racquets before matches to handling ticket requests to scoping out flights (including an aborted private jet booking in Indianapolis), Dan has Sam’s back covered.

“Dan’s made my life much easier. I don’t really do anything [other than play tennis],” Querrey laughs. “Before he emailed me with the idea I’d never thought about having an intern, but it’s kind of a fun thing.”

Dan, 20, is a founding member of Querrey’s chest-painting cheer squad, ‘Samurai,’ which debuted in Los Angeles in 2006. Studying industrial and labour relations at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Dan first conceived the idea of working for Querrey when he began to consider applying for traditional internships in early 2009. “I want to be in sports and I didn’t want to be sitting behind a desk filing papers or getting coffee at an agency,” Dan says. “I proposed to Sam that if he’d cover my travel I could do whatever he wanted. He loved the idea and it ran from there. I can’t think of any internship better than this.”

Adding to the allure of the job, Dan will accompany Querrey on the late-season swings to Asia and Europe, and, although he was willing to work for expenses only, Dan is being paid a handy stipend of three per cent of Querrey’s prize money. Since the internship began at Newport in July, Querrey has won $235,000 (prior to New Haven), with Dan’s cut coming to around $7,000. By clinching the US Open Series at New Haven, Querrey would pocket $2.6 million if he became a surprise winner at the US Open, with Dan's cut of that weighing in at $78,000.

So what are the main responsibilities of a full-service tennis intern? Before the Los Angeles final, for instance, Dan handled the logistics of procuring and then distributing 110 tickets (comped by the tournament) to family and friends, who saw Querrey win his second ATP World Tour title. Before the Indianapolis final against Robby Ginepri, Dan had a private jet reservation on hold – secured by a credit card issued to him by Querrey – to fly his boss and members of the Samurai back to California. “After Sam lost he still wanted to charter the plane, but it would have been over half of his winnings; I told him not to,” Dan says. “So I had to get online to find flights, not just for Sam, but myself and the rest of the Samurai. And we wanted to leave within a couple of hours.”

Dan also doubles as press and fan secretary, helping Querrey craft responses to a flood of emails. "I'll throw out what I want to say... Dan [puts it together, and] makes me sound like a genius," Querrey says.

There are also some more mundane tasks, such as taking Querrey’s racquets to the stringer and applying fresh overgrips before each match. “I’d never gripped a racquet before I started the internship, so Sam sat me down and we wrapped it together. It came up about an inch short. It took me a little while to get used to it. Now I’m an expert. A lot of the American players call me ‘Dan The Intern’, and when they see Sam grab his own lunch they’ll have some fun and say to me, ‘Hey, isn’t that something an intern should do?’”

On the side, Dan still takes his Samurai responsibilities seriously. He works to ensure that new Samurai recruits are schooled in tennis etiquette and determine what message will be spelled out on the group’s collective chest. It’s not rocket science, but it requires some creativity when numbers can fluctuate from just a few to as many as the 14 who turned out in Los Angeles. Variations range from ‘Sam’, ‘Go Sam’,  ‘Samurai’, ‘Sammy’, or ‘Team Samurai’ (with extra exclamation points to accommodate large groups).

“In LA we couldn’t find more face or body paint, so we picked up some plain poster paint that stuck to the skin and burned a little. But it got the job done. You don’t have to shave your chest to be part of the Samurai; the hairy guys find that the paint can clump a little but you can still read the letters.”

Like many internships, Dan’s time with Querrey will likely end just as he’s fully trained and at his peak usefulness to his employer. Come January, Dan will return to college to complete the final semester of his degree, and ultimately apply to Law School. True to form, Dan is already helping Querrey plan for a possible successor, albeit with a somewhat different application process. “We’re thinking of pitching a reality show to Tennis Channel about the hunt for Sam’s next intern. So many people have told me that I have the best internship ever and ask me what it takes to be ‘Dan the Intern’. I’m sure if Sam wanted a new intern there would be a lot of candidates lining up.”

Re: Sam Querrey

American Sam Querrey’s career-best season has come to a premature conclusion after he sustained a right arm injury in a freak accident earlier this week at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Bangkok.

Querrey confirmed that he would miss the remainder of the 2009 ATP World Tour season with this post on his Twitter account Wednesday: “just got back from the doctor, i should be able to hit balls in a month and hopefully ill be back to 100% in 2 months”.

The 21-year-old Californian had been putting on shoes following a practice session Monday ahead of the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok when the glass table he was sitting on collapsed. Querrey was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, and visited a specialist upon his return to the United States Wednesday.

World No. 25 Querrey had put together an exceptional season that included appearances in five ATP World Tour finals – putting him in elite company with the ATP’s big four of Roger Federer (6), Rafael Nadal (7), Andy Murray (6), and Novak Djokovic (7) as players to reach five or more finals in 2009.

He opened the year with a runner-up finish at the Heineken Open in Auckland (l. to del Potro), and stepped up his game another notch following Wimbledon – reaching three straight finals at Newport (l. to Ram), Indianapolis (l. to Ginepri) and Los Angeles (d. Ball). He clinched the 2009 US Open Series at Pilot Pen Tennis, where he advanced to his fourth final of the summer (l. to Verdasco), and entered the US Open at a career-high No. 22 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings.

As the No. 22 seed at Flushing Meadows, Querrey reached the third round before falling to Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling in four sets. He finished the year with a 41-23 mark.

Re: Sam Querrey

Sam Querrey came within one millimeter of serving a nerve in his right arm, which might well have ended his pro tennis career, in the freak accident he incurred in Tokyo earlier this week.

That was the assessment of the team of doctors who operated on Querrey to repair two lacerated muscles. The 22-year-old American from Santa Monica, Calif., ranked No. 25, will not play another tournament this year, but should be ready for the 2010 season.

He was already in the weight room today in Santa Monica, working only his lower body, of course. But if his rehab goes well, he could be working his upper body, and especially strengthening his right arm and shoulder, within eight weeks.

Querrey was cut by a shard of glass when the glass table on which he was sitting, collapsed under his weight.

It was a horrible early finish to his best season since he turned pro in 2006. He had been injury free all season, having played 28 tournaments in the last 52 weeks -- more than any player in the top 20.

Querrey's ranking won't be drastically effected by this injury since he had only about 100 ranking points to defend between now and the end of the year.

Querrey Signs With K-Swiss

Sam Querrey will start the new year clad in new clothes.

Querrey is changing his stripes. The 24th-ranked Querrey has signed an apparel and shoe
endorsement deal with K-Swiss, according to a published report in the SportsBusiness Journal written by Daniel Kaplan.

The second-highest ranked American man behind sixth-ranked Andy Roddick, Querrey has endorsed adidas for the past three years. His contract with adidas expires at the end of this year, so Querrey will make his debut as a K-Swiss player in January during the Australian season.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed though SportsBusiness Journal reports the pact is worth seven figures. Querrey joins fellow American Mardy Fish and Wimbledon semifinalist Tommy Haas as K-Swiss endorsers.

Regarded as the potential successor to Andy Roddick as a future top American man, Querrey posted some of his best results during the North American summer season. Following his five-set loss to Marin Cilic at Wimbledon, Querrey advanced to three consecutive finals — Newport, Indianapolis and Los Angeles — beating Carsten Ball to claim the L.A. title and falling to Fernando Verdasco in the New Haven final prior to the US Open.

Re: Sam Querrey

Back from accident, Querrey returns to practice

OS ANGELES (AP)—American Sam Querrey is back practicing for his return to the ATP Tour after he cut two muscles in his right forearm when he sat on a glass table that broke in Thailand.

The world’s 25th-ranked player said on Tuesday he narrowly avoided damaging the nerve in his serving arm that would have ended his tennis career.

Querrey hurt himself on Sept. 28 after practicing at the Thailand Open. He sat on a couch before going to take a shower. Afterward, he didn’t want to sit back in the same sweaty spot on the couch to put on his socks and shoes.

So he fatefully plopped down on the glass table, and it shattered.

“I fell through it,” he recalled. “When I got up, there was a piece of glass in my arm. Blood was gushing out. I ran down to the trainer. The doctor came and we got the ambulance and went to the hospital.”

Querrey whipped out his cell phone to display a photo of the open wound before it was closed up with 25 stitches during an hourlong surgery in a Bangkok hospital. He cut 30 percent of two different muscles in his arm.

The evidence is a thin, red 3-inch (7 1/2 -centimeter) scar on the inside of his arm.

“I was actually more nervous when I got home and I finally took the splint off after two weeks,” he said. “If my wrist moved in the slightest way, it would send shooting pain down my arm. I didn’t know if I was going to get better.”

During his recovery to strengthen the muscles in his wrist and recover his range of motion, Querrey was forced to do everything with his left hand, including brushing his teeth.

He says his arm feels good, although his serve isn’t quite where it was before the accident.

“My shoulder, it takes a while to warm it up and get that motion going,” he said. “Other than that I feel no difference in any part of my game.”

The accident cut short his career-best season, forcing him to miss five tournaments. The 22-year-old Californian reached five ATP Tour finals this year, putting him in the elite company of No. 1 Roger Federer, No. 2 Rafael Nadal, No. 3 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Andy Murray as players who made at least that many finals.

Querrey won one of those finals, at Los Angeles, and he rose to a career-high 22nd in the rankings. He finished the year with a 41-23 win-loss mark.

No. 6 Andy Roddick is the highest-ranked American on the men’s tour. After him and Querrey, only No. 44 James Blake is ranked among the top 50.

Querrey heard from Roddick and Blake after the accident, but he was most excited about an e-mail from Federer wishing him well.

“That was the greatest,” he said, smiling. “I was so happy. It made my day. It was almost worth it.”

Querrey back on tennis cutting edge two months after Thai accident

Querrey back on tennis cutting edge two months after Thai accident American hope Sam Querrey has made a winning recovery after a Bangkok accident which could have ended his career two months ago by winning an exhibition match in Atlanta.

The 25th-ranked California beat compatriot John Isner in a battle of two-metre-plus players to announce that he's back after a serious cut on his arm sustained as he sat on a fragile glass table which collapsed in the Thai capital.

The freak accident cut two muscles in his right forearm; a few centimetres further away was an artery.

After a rush to hospital and return home to LA, Querrey had to learn to brush his teeth left-handed in addition to going nowhere near a tennis court for nearly two months.

The American had taken to showing picture of his brutal cut to anyone even remotely curious after taking them on his mobile phone.

Among e-mail condolences was one he particularly treasured from Roger Federer. "That was the greatest!", he said, smiling. "I was so happy. It made my day. It (the accident) was almost worth it".

Re: Sam Querrey

Sam Querrey To Return To Defend LA Title

Santa Monica resident and defending champion Sam Querrey will return to the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group in 2010 to defend his title. The 84th annual tournament will be held July 26-August 1 on the campus of UCLA.

Querrey, the 2009 Olympus US Open Series champion, will attempt to be the first player to successfully defend his LA title since Andre Agassi won consecutive titles in 2001.

"Last summer Sam really elevated his game during the US summer, and winning in LA was a jewel in his Olympus US Open Series crown," LA Tennis Open tournament director Bob Kramer said. "Having local heroes like Sam and the Bryan Brothers along with top international stars like Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro gives us a great field for 2010."

Buy LA Tickets

In the summer of 2009, Querrey reached four ATP World Tour finals on home soil, claiming the title in Los Angeles, which propelled him to the top of the Olympus US Open Series standings. Overall, Querrey reached five finals in 2009, and is currently the third highest ranked American player on the ATP World Tour.

Querrey will join World No. 2 Djokovic and No. 5 del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, in the singles field at the LA Tennis Open.

The No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan will also return to LA, where the will look to extend their 12-match winning streak at the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group and are aiming to add to their record of five titles at the tournament.

This past weekend, the Bryans won their fourth career Australian Open title. They will celebrate that win Wednesday night when the Bryan Brothers Band Featuring David Baron will play a concert at the Viper Room. Joining the band for the set will be Counting Crows drummer Jim Bogios.

The season ticket renewal process is underway now for the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group. Additional ticket packages will go on sale in the months before the tournament. Ticket information can be found at www.LATennisOpen.com.

The LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group has been played every year since 1927, making it the longest-running annual professional sporting event in Los Angeles.

Played since 1984 at the LA Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA, the tournament is part of the Olympus US Open Series, the six-week summer tennis season linking 10 ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour events to the US Open.

Re: Sam Querrey

RG 2010 - wywiad z Samem po porażce w 1 rundzie

Q. What happened out there, Sam?
SAM QUERREY: Um, just tired. Not into it. Mentally not there. I mean, you know what, I don't know. Just not did not enjoy myself out there.
It's been like that on and off for like a while. So I'm going home tomorrow.

Q. You had talked about being here for five weeks, you and John both putting in the time, the effort, and the matches. You won a ton of matches. You rethinking that a little bit?
SAM QUERREY: No, I mean, even the first week I was over here in Rome I lost first round. It was similar to a match like this. Passive not that I was passive today. The main thing is I didn't enjoy myself on the court. Wanted off the court.

Q. Is it a natural reaction just being over here?
SAM QUERREY: No. I don't know what it is. I just need to just be in a better mood or just need to enjoy the competition and enjoy being out there more than I do.
Right now, I mean, I'll enjoy it, and as soon as one thing goes wrong, I'm done.

Q. How did Robby play?
SAM QUERREY: He played great. That's the best I've seen him serve. I don't know what the first serve percentage was, but it seemed pretty high. He was painting the lines and he was you know, he's always had a great return and he was making me play.
It's nice to see. He struggled a little bit this year, so hopefully he can win his next round and make a run here.

Q. We're trying to make sense here. You played a lot of matches and you're out in the first round. Andy didn't play any matches, and he's struggling with Jarkko right now. He just lost the third set.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I mean, you never know. You know, last summer I had a great summer. I played every day, basically.
You know, the year before when I played fourth round of the Open, I lost early in Cincinnati and played the Huggy Bear the week before the Open. Didn't play a match for two weeks, and then I went deep in the Open that year.
So a lot of times it's just how you're feeling. You know, a lot people have different approaches to how they want to play. A lot of people want to play a lot of matches; some just want to play very few and get some practice in.
It's all different. For me, too.

Q. Where is home that you're going back to?
SAM QUERREY: California.

Q. Were you in dubs with John?
SAM QUERREY: I am right now. I won't be in about an hour.

Q. Just want to get out of here?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah.

Q. So do you feel like going in you're not in the frame of mind, or does it happen right in the middle of the fight?
SAM QUERREY: I think it happens in the middle. I think if you ask my coach, David, he might say otherwise. When I lost that second set tiebreaker and got broken in the first game, I was done. I wanted to be off the court.
I started thinking about leaving and pulling out of the doubles and how much I wanted to go home, how much I wasn't enjoying.
You're never gonna win a match if you're just being negative. I'm only hurting myself.

Q. Isn't that the definition of a professional, that you don't despair so fully as the match progresses, that you somehow control your feelings?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I need to work on that. I've not been a professional the last, you know, on and off for the last few months. You know, you're out there facing one opponent. I don't want to face the opponent and myself.
You know, I just need to be better than today, in this case, it was Robby. It's someone different every week. But I don't want to be fighting myself out there and also fighting the opponent.

Q. Yet, Sam, you've had some good results on clay. You won Belgrade, won Houston. Are you fighting sort of a Jeckyll/Hyde part of yourself here?
SAM QUERREY: A little bit. Those are 250s, and they're great. I love you know, a tournament win is a tournament win. A final is great. It builds my confidence, but I won Belgrade and my ranking didn't move. I'm kind of past that point right now. Those 250s do nothing for me ranking wise. It's all about the Masters Series and the Grand Slams.
That's where I just have not been playing well. You know, I just need to mentally get it together in my head. I need to enjoy myself out there. I need to enjoy playing. You know, if a guy has a breakpoint against me, I should know, Hey, I've got one of the biggest serves out there. Let's see you win this point off me.
But like I said, I just tank some points.

Q. What has David said about that?
SAM QUERREY: He thinks I'm a little tapped out, which I am. We haven't really talked about it in depth yet, because I just basically finished and came right here.

Q. What's next? Next tournament?
SAM QUERREY: Right now I'm scheduled to play in Queen's.

Q. Do you think you'll get there?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, I don't know. I'm going home tomorrow, and then, yeah, hopefully I'll be there.
