Drama Down Under: Tomic's illness questioned
The continuing saga of controversial Aussie teenager Bernard Tomic continued as the Herald Sun is questioning whether the 18-year-old was legitimately ill when he pulled out of the Australian Open wildcard playoffs.
Tomic notified officials of his withdrawal on Sunday night, but the Herald Sun reported that he practiced for two hours in Queensland on Tuesday, the day the competition began. The newspaper said that Tomic is confident that he will be handed one of Tennis Australia's discretionary wildcards for the Australian Open and didn’t feel he needed to compete in the playoffs.
"If what you're saying is correct, one, I'd be highly annoyed and, two, I'd have to talk to the team on what decision we would be taking," Australian Open director Craig Tiley said. “He'd be considered (for a wildcard), he's been considered all year... but if someone makes a decision to rely on the discretionary wildcard, I never advise someone to do that. This is why we have this event, because you can confirm your opportunity, you know you've got it and you can just prepare for your summer…I know for a fact that each year it's getting harder because there are more players, younger players, who are very good. So it's going to start going to players who are doing the right thing."
Aussie veteran Peter Luczak, who will face James Lemke in quarterfinals of the playoff, said he would compete regardless of his health.
"You couldn't have stopped me from playing this," Luczak said. "Twisted ankle or broken leg, I would have been out here trying."

Na pewno ktoś z MD zrezygnuje tylko po to by GOAT nie przemęczał się w kwalach. I tak jasne jest, że je przejdzie, więc po co odbierać innym szanse

Dokic, Luczak awarded Australian Open wild cards
Melbourne - Jelena Dokic and Peter Luczak, losers at the weekend in playoff finals for Australian Open wild cards, came up winners when Tennis Australia awarded the pair entry into next month's Grand Slam.
Dokic and Luczak both fell at the final hurdle on a rainy Sunday at the culmination of the week-long playoff at Melbourne Park.
Both Aussies will be lining up in the first round when the first major of 2011 begins January 17. "I had a pretty good playoff considering I didn't play a match in over two months," said Dokic, a former quarter-finalist at the Open, "It was a good practice run for me. I'm very happy to receive the wild card.
"I was disappointed to have lost the final when I was winning so easily and everything was going so well. But I should have kept my nerve and the rain didn't help. I played a very good semi-final and a good final," said the 27-year-old, ranked 137th.
The 31-year-old Luczak is treating his wild card as an early Christmas present. "I'm stoked, really pumped about getting a wild card and playing another Australian Open. I feel as though all my Christmases have come at once.
"Last night, my wife and I were high fiving when I found out the news. It's pretty special. It's nice knowing my summer is set. Hopefully I get a few wins under my belt and have a bit of confidence."
