SHANGHAI STARTS TO ROCK
Four men are set to take court on the first full day of main draw action of the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters knowing a successful week at the Qizhong Stadium is imperative if they are to satisfy their ambitions of scoring sufficient points to bolster hopes of qualifying for the ATP World Tour finals in London. In reality only one of them is likely to fulfill his aims.
Fernando Verdasco is the best placed at the moment, having stood inside the top eight names on the Race for the Finals for much of the season. However the left-handed Spaniard, who learned firsthand what the London experience meant almost a year ago, will want to snap himself out of a frustrating run of form since the US Open and the emergent Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker is not the sort of player to bow down lightly.
Since reaching the quarter finals in New York, things have been disappointing for Verdasco. The ninth ranked man from Madrid would have been justified in being confident when he landed in Asia but in his opening appearance in Bangkok didn’t go his way against Benjamin Becker and it was a similar story in Beijing as he slumped to another German, Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The omens are concerning for Verdasco; he also suffered an early exit here in Shanghai a year ago when the experienced Ivan Ljubicic was his assailant. The gangly de Bakker has never previously faced today’s opponent but the Dutchman is upwardly mobile after taking his ranking from 96th position at the beginning of the year to his current place inside the world’s top 50.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has had no option but to stage a late run for a London place after injuring his knee in the Wimbledon semi-final against Andy Murray. The Frenchman hoped to return in time for the U.S. Open but only made it back onto the competitive court a week ago in Tokyo and clearly he needs top flight rehabilitation.
The seasoned Jarkko Nieminen was in no mood to offer such charity last week and it’s doubtful Verdasco’s close friend Feliciano Lopez will do any different. For one thing Lopez will want his countryman to qualify, for another Lopez likes the conditions here at the Qizhong Stadium after reaching the semi-finals where he was forced to default against Rafael Nadal a year ago because of an infected toe.
Lopez has lost to Tsonga on their two previous meetings, in the Marseille semi-final 18 months ago and Wimbledon in 2007. He will be determined to prevent the big man from France making it three in a row.
Jurgen Melzer has quietly put together sufficient points to put him in with a chance of reaching London as both a singles and doubles player. With Taipei’s 276th ranked Tsung-Hua Yang providing the opposition today, the Austrian would appear to have the most straightforward task amongst the London contenders with 19 year-old Yang not managing to graduate off the second tier Challenger circuit until being handed a wild card against the 13th seed today.
Marcos Baghdatis is the last of the London hopefuls and admittedly the 25 year-old is something of a long shot, currently standing at 16th place in the Race, almost 1,400 points behind Verdasco. But the Cypriot could never be accused of being somebody who doesn’t try and placed in the same section of the draw as the out-of-sorts Murray, he will realize this week presents a great opportunity but first he must overcome a tricky opener. France’s Jeremy Chardy has beaten Baghdatis on both occasions the pair have previously met, the most recent in Toronto just a matter of weeks ago.
Both previous matches have been on hard court, both extremely closely contested with three of the five sets played extending to tie-breaks. Chardy opted to head for European clay after the U.S. Open and reach the quarter finals in Bucharest but acclimatized to Asian conditions by winning his way through the qualifying rounds in Shanghai. The outcome should be fascinating.

ALL TOP 20 HEADING TO SHANGHAI ROLEX MASTERS
Tennis in Asia has never seen such a galaxy of tennis stars at the one tournament. The Shanghai Rolex Masters is living up to its name as the biggest and most prestigious event in Asia.
Every player from the top 20, headed by world No.1 Rafael Nadal are heading to Qi Zhong Stadium for what promises to be the greatest tennis championship ever played on the continent.
“We are the only ATP Masters 1000 outside North America and Europe so it’s only fitting that we have the draw that we are expecting,” Tournament Director Michael Luevano said. “This is the only tournament in the region that will showcase the Grand Slam winners from 2010, Rafael Nadal (French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) and Roger Federer (Australian Open), as well as the finalists from those events, Andy Murray (Australian Open), Robin Soderling (French Open), Tomas Berdych (Wimbledon) and Novak Djokovic (US Open).
“Everyone is buzzing with excitement and sports fans in Shanghai will be ecstatic with the excitement and atmosphere that is going to unfold at Qi Zhong from this Sunday. The stadium will be a hive of activity with the center court and the new show courts that were used for the first time last year promising to provide a schedule that will be extraordinary.”
The main draw cut-off for the Shanghai Rolex Masters is 44. The last player to receive direct acceptance is Serbia’s Davis Cup hero Janko Tipsarevic.
“All along the slogan for the Shanghai Rolex Masters has been ‘Simply the Best’. It has always been our mantra to give the public a great experience when they come to the tournament; we believe we are doing that,” Tournament Director Leon Sun said. “All this will only emphasise our title as ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year.
“Good tickets are still available but in the last two weeks ticket sales have gone through the roof and that shows how much the fans here are looking forward to the tournament.”
Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko will be looking to retain the title he won last year over Nadal, while the Spaniard wants to win his first title in the leading city for Asian tennis and the only area where he has not won a major title.
Federer will be chasing the form that saw him win the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai and the same goes for Djokovic, while the likes of Murray and Andy Roddick expect to do all they can to steer the title in their respective directions.
Stats to note: 5 players (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, del Potro, Roddick) have won Grand Slam titles, 5 more players have been Grand Slam finalists (Berdych, Soderling, Baghdatis, Murray, Tsonga), 9 players have won ATP Masters 1000 titles (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Roddick, Berdych, Davydenko, Tsonga, Ljubicic) , 3 players (Federer, Nadal, Roddick) have been ranked World No.1.
In addition to the amazing tennis that will be on show, Qi Zhong will provide plenty of off-court activity during the week, including links to the fabulous EXPO which is currently in full swing as well. More details to be unveiled in the next few days.

Przynajmniej te 2 godziny do 10 zlecą ciut szybciej.
Mardy Fish wycofał się z imprezy. Amerykaninowi dokucza uraz kostki.

Raz jeden mógł Łukasz zrobić coś pożytecznego, to oczywiście wtopił. Dobrze, że przynajmniej potrzymał trochę Johna na korcie.
